Jett Williams – Source: nypost.com

The New York Mets have the most underrated farm system in baseball heading into the 2025 season. They fell out of the top ten in 2024 due to injuries to star prospects, Jett Williams and Drew Gilbert. Both of these players have shown tremendous promise. Their injuries have pushed back their arrival date to the Major Leagues. There is always uncertainty about players being able to play at the same level once they return.

While injured for a significant part of 2024 Jett Williams has displayed plate discipline akin to Juan Soto. A career .408 OBP and .825 OPS in the Minor Leagues combined with speed on the basepaths will make him a nightmare for pitchers. His speed will also allow for greater RBI opportunities for the heavy hitters in the Mets’ lineup like Francisco Lindor and Juan Soto. His quickness is an asset at shortstop allowing him to quickly get to ground balls in the hole and his arm strength lets him throw across the diamond with ease. The biggest thing going against him is the small sample size of games over the past two seasons.

Drew Gilbert has not missed a beat since coming back from his hamstring injury. He made contributions on both sides of the ball in his short 2024 campaign. The lingering effects of the hamstring injury may hinder his quickness in the outfield. A healthy 2025 season should see him back to his old ways. If the hamstring continues to bother Gilbert it would make sense to move him to a corner outfield position where he does not need to cover as much ground as centerfield. There is a lot of uncertainty surrounding his performance and only time will tell how he performs.

The Mets have a tremendous farm system despite the injury bug. Their prospects will be able to make an immediate impact with an aging roster of players. Many teams ranked in the Top 10 are either not playoff ready or their prospects are being held in the Minor Leagues due to established players at their respective positions on the Major League roster. The top position players in the Mets farm system are all capable of playing multiple positions giving the Mets plenty of versatility.

Ryan Clifford displayed tremendous power with the Binghamton Rumble Ponies in 2024. If Pete Alonso elects to join a different club this offseason, Ryan Clifford could be molded into the new first base mainstay in Flushing. First base seems a good fit as he does not have the speed of Gilbert or any of the current outfielders on the Mets roster. He has comparable power stats to Alonso, but the 21-year-old still needs time to develop and ascend the ranks to the Major League roster.

Brandon Sproat has continued the route of college players like Paul Skenes and Jacob Wilson, ascending to the AAA level by the end of his first professional season. His high 90s fastball will get him to the Major Leagues and the addition and utilization of secondary pitches will allow him to stay. His slider has good movement but establishing a third pitch will help him to have success against Major League hitters. The pitching lab the Mets have crafted will serve Sproat well should he run into trouble at the big-league level.

Juan Soto signed the richest contract in sports history, the 2024 season was magical and their farm system is one of the best in baseball. If you have not yet, I implore you to step right up and greet the Mets. You’ll have the time of your life. Guaranteed.
